Annie Proulx - Brokeback Mountain

Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two ranch hands, come together when they're working as sheepherder and camp tender one summer on a range above the tree line. At first, sharing an isolated tent

 Spoiler-free review

There is so much I want to say about this book but I don't know how to articulate myself. Because I'm crying so hard.

Assuming you have seen the film Brokeback Mountain you might know that there isn't much conversation going on between Ennis Del-Mar and Jack Twist. It is the same with the book, but the dialogue in this short story is, in my opinion, fully sufficient.

The characters feel real, they both have their problems and their fears and - that is the interesting part about them - distinct language. They're rough and just not posh in their language and that is what makes them so real, I think.

The story is heartbreaking - you can understand why the characters argue about their future and you are made to understand both characters' points. You can't claim one of them 'guilty' of not choosing what both of them secretly want and you can't not feel bad for the other one that tries so hard to make his dream come true.

There are, of course, the wifes that take are being cheated. Although Lureen (Jack's wife) is mentioned only once or twice, you totally get what Alma is thinking and why she feels betrayed.

I really, really liked this book and the ending, as I said, left me in tears.
